Another championship has come and gone, and with it, ending ceremonies that offer a glimpse at Pokémon’s upcoming content. While Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the current focus for most fans of the franchise, Pokémon TCG Pocket has offered a surprise announcement that has players excited for the fall season.
Currently, the return of Mega Evolution is the big talking point among Pokémon players. After its absence since Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, fans of the Kalos gimmick have been begging to see it return to the game.
While it has already been announced that Megas are returning to the TCG in upcoming sets, with certain cards already available in Japan, Pokémon TCG Pocket hasn’t had any major announcements surrounding the advanced form of Evolution.
However, Mega fans have gotten a treat during the final announcements for the 2025 Pokémon World Championships, where it has been confirmed Megas will debut in the mobile app version of the tabletop game.
Megas Are Heading to Pokémon TCG Pocket
As revealed in the newest Pocket trailer on the Official Pokémon YouTube account, Megas will be coming this fall, when a “new season” is set to start.
The trailer does not give any indication of what Pocket means by “seasons”, and it has not named any new expansions by their official titles. Instead, the trailer primarily shows off Mega Gyarados ex, Mega Blaziken ex, and Mega Altaria ex.
Like with the standard TCG format, these new versions of Mega ex cards won’t evolve from the final evolutionary line of a capable species. Instead, they will evolve from the previous evolution. In the original TCG run for Megas following X & Y, Mega cards evolved differently. To get a Mega on the field for a Pokémon like Altaria, a fully evolved Altaria had to be in play.
Now, Mega Altaria ex evolves directly from Swablu, cutting the number of steps required to get these cards moving.
Unfortunately, none of the options shown in the trailer look to be amazing cards compared to some of the options already in use by competitive players in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
This debut for Pocket isn’t surprising, with Legends: Z-A set to release in just a few months. New information about these expansions will likely drop as August comes to a close.
