While getting the basic materials for a base in Hytale isn’t difficult, the jump into uncommon and rare options can be surprisingly challenging. After getting copper from the caves around your base, you’ll need to start hunting for iron ore deep in the earth.

Iron ore is the second metal type in Hytale, and is critical for building durable armor and weapons. Without it, you will have a difficult time tackling the higher-tier enemies that lurk in specific areas around the map. However, you’ll need to risk your own safety to get that first batch of iron ore.

Like the copper ore, iron ore in Hytale is found protruding from stone at a specific depth. We found that it only forms in volcanic stone, which can be found near lava flows deep underground. We have not found any on the surface or at higher levels of caves near the spawn points.

It is important to note that iron ore can only be mined successfully with a Copper Pickaxe or better. The crude pickaxe will not work.

Pop the ore out of the stone and take it back to your camp to process it.

Like with the copper ore, you will need to place your iron ingots into the furnace to smelt them into iron ingots. A single ore will make one ingot, which can then be taken to the crafting table, armory table, or blacksmith’s table to be used in advanced crafting.

Iron armor is a big step up from copper, especially early in the game. The faster you can shed the copper set for iron, the sooner you’ll be able to take on advanced mobs at bases or deep underground. Be sure to focus on upgrading your weapon first, as it will be more durable and provide more protection as you work on getting enough iron ore for a proper set of weapons and armor.
