All Starter Tools & How to Get Them
You’ll start with rusted hand-me-downs for most tools, but you don’t come by all of them the same way. While some will get gifted to you pretty naturally in cutscenes with villagers, others will require completing quests or purchasing from shops.
To help ensure you’ve got a full arsenal, here’s each tool you can unlock early in the game and how to get them.

TIP: You can use your Pickaxe to dig up treasure spots, so there’s no urgent need for a shovel in early gameplay. Save your hard-earned coin for other items.
How to Upgrade Tools in Fields of Mistria
In Fields of Mistria, you can upgrade tools in two main ways – buy a better version of that tool from the blacksmith shop, or upgrade it yourself with raw materials at the forge.
Upgrading tools at the forge will cost you materials and a bit of time, whereas buying the next best version of tools from the blacksmith will cost you in coin.
Sometimes, certain NPCs will also gift you upgraded tools as part of heart events – we’re still gathering data on how often you can flirt your way to fancy new items.
