This week, I attended the launch of EA Sports FC Pro‘s eSports season, and it was brilliant. As I sat in the press room watching every match play out, it felt like a proper kickoff for what will be an extremely exciting season.
The highlight of this week’s matches was Vejrgang vs Tekkz. I didn’t know how it was going to go as the vent began, but everyone around me had thoughts, theories, and bets on the scores. The end result wasn’t entirely shocking, but the sheer force from one player dominating brought to mind what I’ve seen in professional football in real life.
EA Sports FC Pro League Is Enthralling And Well Worth Watching
Vejrgang vs Tekkz was the highlight of the day. The pair went into the match with high hopes they’d annihilate each other, but only one could emerge victorious. The thing is, it wasn’t even close. Vejrgang has calmly walked a 1-0 all the way to the bank before, but he wasn’t going to do that this time.
What we saw was a brutal match where Tekkz definitely held his own and gave it all he had, but Vejrgang took hold of that game and kept on pushing. Once we were through extra time and breaks, it was 9-3 to Vejrgang, and even those who put a bet on the score were surprised.
Given all the hype that had been floating around, I thought we’d be looking at double digits from someone, but that didn’t happen. I think the only positive of that is that Tekkz can hold onto some semblance of pride.
There were some great matches throughout the night that made everything well worth watching. This is EA Sports FC, played by those who are best at it. What bleeds through the screen is the fun, the enjoyment these players have when they face off against one another, and the sense that this is much more than you see on standard streams or YouTube.
ESports really does help you appreciate a game in a new light, but also an older one. For example, in the UK right now, everyone is eyeing the real-life football team Arsenal as potential winners for the Premier League already.
The reason for this is that the team’s won nine of the twelve games it’s already played. Statistically speaking, no team has ever not won the competition after doing this. It would be the team’s first time winning the league since the 2003/04 season.
That alone has me excited about football, but combined with EA Sports FC Pro, I couldn’t be more excited about this sport that I’ve rarely ever cared about.
If a favourite winning a rival match doesn’t hook you, then maybe the fact that he’s not top of the leaderboard will. Sure, he’s performed well in the most anticipated match of this season so far, but he’s not performed as well overall.
In fact, the season’s first through-ball slipped through his defense and caused him to almost smash the player cam. It’s all to play for, and I really don’t mean that lightly. In a lot of sports, one team can win the competition year-in-year-out. In eSports, if you don’t work hard, you’re going to get taken out no matter how good you are.
This is why live eSports is so exciting. You can go in with all the expectations of how the event is going to play out and who is going to come out on top. But you could be wrong just as easily as being right. Always expect the unexpected.
