When it comes to adventure, Fifth Edition has no shortage of options. From brand-new content in familiar locations to reimaginings of past campaigns, 5E has kept gamers busy for years. However, these adventures come to a climatic crescendo in Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin, as a race against time takes the party across the multiverse.
For decades, the Lich God Vecna has held a terrifying seat among D&D‘s most terrifying villains. He has even made appearances in the TV show Stranger Things and the video game Dead by Daylight, manipulating those around him to gain power. Now, players must take Vecna on in Eve of Ruin, lest the planes be plunged into peril.

Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin Challenges Players At Top Level

Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin is a top-level campaign designed to take the party from level 10 through 20. This is the perfect campaign for characters who may have starred in previous campaigns with a lower difficulty rating, allowing parties to reprise heroes for a new adventure. The recommended party size for this campaign is four to six, allowing room for a spread of skills, classes, and backgrounds.
Vecna: Eve of Ruin is a unique campaign, as it takes the party across the multiverse. While traveling different planes is possible when picking up Spelljammer, fans will encounter many familiar locations as they work to stop the Lich God from terrorizing existence.
This campaign promises intricate puzzles, difficult combat, and opportunities for parties to bond as they either submit to or overcome the plans Vecna has set in motion. While we won’t be giving any of those details away in this review, I can promise it is a wild ride.
This Is The Campaign To Endcap Fifth Edition
With the close of Fifth Edition’s current format just around the corner, Eve of Ruin feels like the perfect conclusion for those who have spent years in the colorful settings presented in dozens of campaigns. Well-known characters including Tasha and Mordenkainen are present in the major story, as well as locations from popular campaigns like The Curse of Strahd. The adventure challenges players to use all the knowledge they have gained in Fifth Edition, and in situations they have never encountered before.
For me, this is the campaign I would want to play after working through the earlier sourcebooks. It was a delight to see the return of so many locations I’ve spent hours attempting to save in previous campaigns, and it greatly increased the stakes. These aren’t just random locations, they are places that hold memories of past party adventures, and I don’t want Vecna to touch them.
The Perfect Adventure For A Long-Standing Party
While it is possible to start Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin with a brand new party at level 10, I would recommend players bring characters from previous Fifth Edition campaigns into this adventure. I personally will be running this after my adventures as a DM in Spelljammer, as the multiverse themes overlap perfectly with the stakes set in this storyline.
Eve of Ruin is an opportunity to turn stumbling protagonists into heroes, and it is a great final saga for those who have played a character from level one. It will offer satisfaction, excitement, and a sense of catharsis if all party members make it to the story’s harrowing conclusion.
Final Score – 10/10
Dungeons & Dragons Vecna: Eve of Ruin is the definition of a thrilling climax. This campaign makes use of everything that came before, building out a descriptive, stunning story that will leave players breathless. It is a masterpiece of story-crafting and a delightful highlight for the 50-year Anniversary of the tabletop game. D&D fans who pick this campaign for their next adventure are in for a treat – and it is sure to be a challenge party members will never forget.
