During Warframe‘s September 2024 devstream live from the Tokyo Game Show, developer Digital Extremes announced the release date for the Koumei & the Five Fates update as well as the game’s first-ever expansion demo for Warframe: 1999.
Warframe‘s Koumei & the Five Fates update is the next major storyline fans can play through in the game from October 2, 2024. We’ll get to more on that below, but it’s important you know that you can also try a demo for Warframe: 1999 from October 16, 2024. This may be the most highly anticipated expansion for the game ever made, one that I’ve heard people who have been in Warframe for years say finally feels like a questline built for them. As a 90s kid, I don’t disagree.
Spoilt for Choice
The above trailer for Warframe Koumei & the Five Fates is narrated by the phenomenal Kenjiro Tsuda. It shows off the game’s 58th Warframe, Koumei the Dice Maiden, and her unique set of abilities that are some of the most visually impressive I’ve seen in my time as a player.
In practice, you’ll roll Koumei’s six-sided dice and adapt to the stochastic nature of her abilities. She can thread together Kumihimo traps to deal damage and inflict nerfs on enemies and use her Omikuji ability to receive a set of instructions that, if followed, net her a buff. This ability plays on Koumei’s knowledge of the future she gains from her dice rolls.
Koumei can also summon protective Omamori charms that orbit her and convert incoming damage to either health or shield energy. Finally, her ultimate, Bunraku, summons the strings of fate. With these, she can puppet enemies and apply status effects to act as lord over their very essence.

As for what you’ll be doing in Koumei & the Five Fates, fans can look forward to a new mission type: Shrine Defense. As you might be able to guess, you’ll be defending a Shrine as enemies emerge from the sea to destroy it.
Defeating enemies generates Shrine Offerings until you’ve collected enough that the Infested Oni mini-boss emerges to try to take you down.
These missions are how you’ll collect the Blueprints and parts required to craft and claim Koumei as a Warframe for your arsenal. She’s also got an array of weapons, including a makeshift “gunbrella” called Higasa, which sounds like my next main.
Note that before you can tackle this update’s addition to Warframe‘s storyline, you’ll need to work through Saya’s Vigil and Once Awake. These aren’t too taxing, but are quests you want to work on early if you can so you’re free to hop right into the update on release day.
As I mentioned, this was all revealed during the live Tokyo Game Show 2024 Devstream, and the team at Digital Extremes couldn’t be happier to bring something brand new to fans at the event. Megan Everett, Community Director explained, “It was so surreal to be back in Tokyo to reveal a new Warframe to our Japanese community and our players around the world tuning in virtually. Traveling the globe this year to meet Tenno in person has been rejuvenating for the soul of our
team as we trek on our path toward Warframe: 1999 later this year. Until then, we hope everyone enjoys Koumei and optimizing her high skill-ceiling gameplay.”

When Koumei & the Five Fates arrives in Warframe on October 2, the update will pack in so much more. Anyone playing the game between October 2 to 16, 2024 will unlock Caliban for free because he’s getting a massive and long-requested rework with the update.
As for that Warframe: 1999 demo that we all get our hands on from October 16, 2024, there’s a reward just for jumping in too. Anyone who plays the demo will unlock the Protokol Longsword Skin.
However, you’re going to need to have completed the Awakening and Vor’s Prize quests to access the demo in the first place. Don’t worry. These are very early-game quests and are shockingly easy to rush through if you need to do so beforehand.
The final piece of Warframe news Digital Extremes shared at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 is that the game will have improvements on PS5 Pro. The developer isn’t ready to share what they are yet, but it’s nice to know it’s pushing boundaries in every possible way.
I have been obsessed with what Warframe: 1999 is bringing to the table ever since its first trailer was released. It takes players back to New Year’s Eve 1999 in this strange universe for a fresh take on the Y2K fear, something I myself vividly remember living through.
I’m really excited to jump into the expansion when it’s released in late 2024, and being able to try it out in a demo feels like an incredibly special treat.
