A new era has arrived for an open-world sandbox game, with its 2.0 launch Trailmakers: Pioneers. The overhaul included in this update reimagines the game, adding a new campaign and modes for players to explore.

Trailmakers first launched in 2019, offering an experience crossed between Roblox and Minecraft with a goal to build unique vehicles and explore a vast open-world map. From cars to planes, it was up to the player to pick the best transportation and will it into exsistance.

The game has an excellent crafting system and encourages creativity at every corner, but Flashbulb wanted to offer gamers a more diverse experience. The 2.0 update offers exactly that.

Trailmakers: Pioneers Adds Survival Mode

One of the most anticipated additions of the 2.0 update is Survival Mode. This popular gamemode has propelled titles like Minecraft forward for over a decade, and has become a staple of sandbox titles.

Players can now board their hand-crafted vehicles to survive harsh biomes, battle difficult enemies, and challenge themselves in a Mad Max-adjacent experience.

Alongside survival, Trailmakers: Pioneers has also added a campaign mode that takes place on the planet Gregory. This story-based gameplay allows fans to interact with the Froggit inhabitants and work through the story with more goals and direction than free exploration.

Additionally, overhauls to the UI and building mechanics make creating your dream vehicle a more intuitive and streamlined process.

Bonus Action Preview

We had the chance to jump into Trailmakers: Pioneers a bit early, and while I am a terrible driver and regularly get stuck on rocks, the creative freedom and explorative joy that is present in Trailmakers is addictive.

I am a survival fan to the core, and this new gamemode is exactly what I look for when jumping into anything with an open-world map. While I’m not building strongholds, dodging zombies, or stockpiling potatoes, the chance to explore the world with higher stakes is compelling and exciting.

We still have a lot of the game to see, and will be coming back with a full review after we’ve had a chance to really dive into the new mechanics. However, what we’ve looked at so far makes it clear that Trailmakers: Pioneers is the best iteration of the game so far, with plenty to entice new and longtime players alike.
