Like most farming sims, Village in the Shade includes a tool wheel full of helpful gadgets. You’ve got your axe, shovel, watering can… and flashlight? Yes, this game goes bump in the night, and it has a few unique tools to match.
If you’re wondering how to fill that tool wheel or how to upgrade your axe so you can finally, truly clear that field, our Village in the Shade tool guide is here to help.
How to Open the Tool Wheel & Use Tools

To use your tools in Village in the Shade, you must first equip them. To do this, open the tool wheel by pressing ZR on your controller. Then, select the desired tool to equip it.
To use the equipped item, simply press Y while facing the item you want to interact with. The exception here is the whistle, which is used by pressing L with the tool menu open.
All Tools in Village in the Shade & How to Get Them
In Village in the Shade, you’ll fill that tool wheel pretty quickly. Along with the tools in the wheel, you will also have access to a whistle ability from the tool menu, which you can use to summon help in times of need. Here are all of the tools in the tool wheel, how to get them, and what they do.
These are listed in the order that they will be unlocked in the game, so you know roughly when to expect each tool to be available.
All Tool Upgrades
Once you have your tool wheel filled up, you’ll want to start upgrading some of those tools. After all, the big rocks and tree stumps don’t break themselves! You won’t be able to upgrade your tools until you start mining ores and unlock molds. You will get a letter when this happens, after which time you’ll be able to buy the required tool molds from the general store.
Here are the tool upgrades in Village in the Shade and how to get them, listed in alphabetical order. All tool upgrades, except those obtained via quests, are crafted at the Anvil in your yard.
