ufophilia review
Longtime Ludology Now! readers will know that I only ever accept review codes if the game looks personally interesting to me, or if I think it could be fun. I don’t pick games I think will be bad on purpose, and I never want to be negative about something anyone worked hard on. That’s not what we do here.
That all being said, once you accept a review code you have to follow through and review it, and as writ in the Journalism Blood Ritual Initiation Trials all professional critics must take, you have to be honest in all your reviews. To that end, I regret to inform you that UFOPHILIA was not a very enjoyable game – for me, at least.
UFOPHILIA is Phasmophobia with aliens, but single-player. That’s the pitch. For someone like me, who was intrigued by Phasmophobia but wasn’t going to go to the trouble of convincing three friends to buy it, this is a perfect concept. That’s why I agreed to receive the review code in the first place – I wanted to play a game like that. I still want to.
This is a PC title from a small team, so I imagine that your mileage and performance may vary. Personally, I attempted to play UFOPHILIA many times, with as many different settings enabled as possible, and I was never able to get past the first mission (specifically, the one after the training mission) without the game crashing.
There were positives. I enjoyed the different items (although nearly all of them felt equally adequate for ghost hunting, and not quite ‘sci-fi’ enough for the subject matter) and I liked some of the effects. The sound design was good overall. There were two jumps scares which legitimately got me, and that was nice, but there were also multiple instances of the alien just standing under a light, not doing anything at all, looking very silly indeed.
UFOPHILIA is a game that seems made for streamers, which (along with stock asset flips) is a genre in and of itself now. I am sure an audience would enjoy watching someone else play it, if the game runs well on their system and does not crash. However, it’s hard for me to recommend buying UFOPHILIA for yourself. I’d watch a stream though.
