Indue studio Stelleas has announced its inaugural game today, Stellar Reach. This title looks to be an absolute banger in the 4X space because it does what very few even attempt to: puts you in control of humanity on the cusp of its interstellar era.
If, like me, you’re a fan of The Expanse, then this game could well scratch itches you never knew you had. You’ll take the human race from Earth into the solar system and deep space on a quest for supremacy. However, humans have divided into distinct factions during their travels to the nearby stars, meaning there’s competition out there and rich rewards for whoever has the will to take them.
An Ambitious 4X Strategy From An Unexpected Studio
What makes Stellar Reach so impressive is that it’s the work of a solo indie developer at Stelleas, James Miller. Having worked with massive studios like Ubisoft in the past, Miller is finally entering the competitive world of indie games with a title he’s been working on for 10 years, and the sheer scale of it shows that every day of that time has had an impact on its scope.
You’ll start each playthrough as one of eight factions at the veritable dawn of humanity’s expansion into interstellar space. The solar system has already been colonized, and now it’s the stars beyond that humans want to travel to, control, and exploit.
How to make the most of the resources available to you is your choice. With that said, you’ll want to keep the three main victory paths in mind if you’re going to win. You could choose to take victory by force through supremacy, building as many warships as possible, taking everything you want, or destroying it so nobody can have it.
Prosperity is a very different path, focusing on citizen welfare, infrastructure, and being a glowing example of human civilization. I think I like this path the most because it’s going to be the hardest to achieve in my mind. You’ll need to push to please everyone, and that’s never easy when vying factions are willing to blow your cities up from orbit.
Finally, there’s industrial supremacy. To win with this path, you must automate everything. Put your trust in machines, run resources across the universe to achieve every goal, and deny your enemies everything they need to even come close to beating you.

To reach victory, you’ve got to work through what I must say is one of the most comprehensive research trees I’ve ever seen in a 4X game. That’s a good thing, though, because this would be boring if it were easy or over too quickly. I like a 4X game that stretches out before me as I play, teasing me with victory while enemy factions surprise me with their technology just as I think I’ve got this in the bag.
What I really love is James Miller’s sentimental statement about the game he cares so much for. “Stellar Reach entered development over 10 years ago. Since then, the game has grown beyond its original vision and is crafted with more depth and care than I originally expected for it. And, I’ve grown with it. A decade of hard work, experience, mistakes, and passion has finally brought this game to the point of being my first independent title, something many of us developers wish for. It’s strange and wonderful seeing it come together and wondering how it will be received. It’ll be stranger still when it’s finished.”
Stellar Reach is due to be released in September 2025. If it sounds like the kind of game you’d like to play on launch day, then it’s worth wishlisting it on Steam now. Adding a game to your wishlist is a huge help to the developer and a great way to show support for free.
