Anyone looking forward to Quantic Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse will probably have a longer wait than anticipated. Way back at The Game Awards 2021, Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream announced that it was working on a new action-adventure title set in the ever-expansive Star Wars universe.
As shown in the pre-rendered trailer from The Game Awards 2021, Star Wars Eclipse is set in the High Republic era, a time long before the events of the Star Wars movies that saw the Jedi Order at its apex. While much of the game’s plot has been wrapped in mystery so far, Quantic Dream has promised a sprawling narrative that players will shape through their choices, not unlike the studio’s past games.
Star Wars Eclipse Might Not Come Out For A Few More Years
Unfortunately, Star Wars Eclipse has fallen under a shroud of silence that would make Emperor Palpatine blush, and a new report from Insider Gaming suggests that this might not change anytime soon. According to some sources dating back to last December, Star Wars Eclipse “is still looking years off from completion.”
The latest episode of Insider Gaming Weekly painted an even bleaker picture for Star Wars Eclipse, with sources saying that its troubled production is part of an overall rough patch for Qunatic Dream. Parent company NetEase is said to be at a crossroads with what to do about the developer, with Insider Gaming‘s Mike Straw claiming that there is talk of it being sold outright.
This will supposedly depend on the success of Spellcasters Chronicles, a free-to-play strategy game that entered Early Access on Steam back in February. If Spellcasters Chronicles fails to make a profit, NetEase could choose to “reevaluate its commitment to [Quantic Dream]” and stop any further investments – though Straw has stressed that NetEase doesn’t want to shut it down entirely.
It’s worth noting that neither NetEase nor Quantic Dream has commented on any of the claims made by Insider Gaming, even if the lack of any official developments about Star Wars Eclipse is a troubling sign. In the meantime, there are still plenty of interesting Star Wars games on the horizon, such as the fast-paced Star Wars: Galactic Racer that is supposedly blasting onto the scene later this year.
