Pixelshire Gameplay Overview

Pixelshire is a cozy sandbox RPG where you help build up the small town of Pixelshire. In addition to helping out the locals and forging friendships, you can literally shape the town thanks to its terraforming elements.
Players will chop wood, mine ores, grow crops, and gather other resources to craft bigger and better items. You’ll have to manage your tools, as they do wear down over time. Pixelshire also features fishing and plenty of quests to get to know your fellow inhabitants of the local town. Thanks to the “follow me” feature, you can also have friends tag along to help out, much like in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Like any good RPG, Pixelshire also offers a skill tree to unlock new perks as you get better at mining, fishing, farming, and more.
Pixelshire Platforms
As of its May 8, 2025, release date, Pixelshire is available on PC via Steam for $19.99.
Pixelshire plans to release for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on December 31, 2025.
Do You Need a Controller for Pixelshire?
Although Pixelshire does offer full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers, a controller is not required.
The game runs well with mouse and keyboard controls or with a DualSense controller – I tested both and ran into no issues. Personally I did prefer mouse and keyboard but I think that’s just my farming sim vibes.
Note: Some Steam reviews note having some confusion with controller, but for the DualSense at least, it worked just fine for me.
Does Pixelshire Have Romance?
According to the little Romance heart in the character profile screen, yes, there is Romance in Pixelshire.

The game’s description and release trailer don’t mention romance or marriage, and we haven’t really dug into this element yet, but it does look like it’s an option!
How to Unlock Tools in Pixelshire
Most of your basic tools are easy to acquire via the tutorial and early-game quests in Pixelshire. Here’s a breakdown of each tool we’ve gotten so far and who gives it to you. These base wooden tools are listed roughly in order of when you’ll access each tool as you play through the main story, so you don’t have to wonder if you missed something!
One important thing to note about tools in Pixelshire is that wooden ones will break down over time. So, you’ll need to buy new ones or upgrade to stronger ones. We’ve also noted where to get replacement tools for those that break, as the game just tells you to see the “relevant villager.”
| Tool | How to Get | How to Replace (If Applicable) |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden Hoe | Talk to Margarita during Forage and Harvest intro quest | Use Wooden Hoe recipe to craft |
| Wooden Watering Can | Talk to Margarita during Farming Part 2 quest | Use Wooden Watering Can recipe to craft |
| Wooden Shovel | Talk to Cpt Farrell during A Pond for Cpt Farrell McGee quest | TBD |
| Wooden Axe | Talk to Big Jack during the Chop Shop quest | Buy from Big Jack |
| Wooden Pickaxe | Talk to Bron in the The Cave quest | TBD |
| Copper Pickaxe | Complete Master Miner quest for Bron | TBD |
| Wooden Hammer | Talk to Eva after using the Furnace, as part of the Building quest | TBD |
| Wooden Fishing Rod | Talk to Cpt Farrell after getting the Fishing quest from Eva | TBD |
| Wooden Sword | Talk to Valerie after unlocking the Find Jack quest | TBD |
You will get a workbench from Big Jack the first time you’re introduced to him, and will be able to use your collected blueprints to craft applicable tools at that point. This should happen early on in the story, so you won’t be without crafting for very long.
How to Get & Complete New Quests
Main story quests will unfold one after the other, especially early on. However, side quests work a little differently in Pixelshire compared to other popular farming sims. There’s no job board in town. Rather, you’ll get quests directly from the townsfolk. When someone has a big blue exclamation point over their head, they’ve got a new quest to offer.

Your quests will be tracked via the quests area fo your journal. As you complete them, they’ll be marked off automatically. In most cases, there’s no need to seek out the original NPC again to claim your reward.
You will want to be careful with this, however. I noticed that the iron bars I needed for a story quest kept getting eaten up by a side quest from Big Jack. Because those iron bars were needed to unlock the ability to mine more, that was a pretty big problem!
Thankfully, you can delete active side quests and remove them from your log if needed. That way, they won’t steal limited resources from you early on. Hopefully, this will be addressed in future updates.
How to Refill the Watering Can in Pixelshire
One slight frustration with Pixelshire is figuring out how to refill your watering can. There is a specific spot near Margarita’s house where you can do this early on – it’s right near where she gives you the watering can, where no fence blocks the water.

For another source of water for your watering can, Margarita sells a blueprint for a well. You can buy the bluepring and craft this to get another source of water for your watering can.
We’ll keep adding to this main walkthrough guide as we play through Pixelshire.
