Developer Gravity Rifters has released a brand new trailer for its upcoming mining, base building, tower defense, and survival game Cosminers. While it looks incredibly stressful, there’s also something cozy beneath the surface.
Anyone who has played a great tower defense will know what I mean. There’s something inherently snuggly and warm about blasting enemies away with automated weapons, but this title takes things to an entirely new level.
Cosminers Hopes To Push The Boat Out With Mechanical Depth As Well as Breadth
There’s so much to unpack in the brand new trailer above, but it warrants some explanation for those of you. As its name suggests, Cosminers is a sci-fi co-op game for up to four players in which you’ll spend your days building a mining facility to harvest precious materials from an alien world.
While your machines work, you can check out the local wildlife and maybe even a few strange rocks for even more rare minerals. However, you and your crew need food, water, and air to survive. That presents a big problem when the very air of the rocky sphere you’re hurtling through space on is hostile to your very existence.
So, to remedy this, you’ll need to construct something more akin to a home away from home than a base. Think hydroponic farms for air and food, and purifiers for water. Carving out a slice of comfort comes at a cost, though.
As you might expect, nightfall brings out all the beasties. Giant bugs will attack your base at night and, seemingly, when you’re attempting to escape or send materials offworld. To keep them at bay, you need to construct defenses.
This is where Cosminers pulls in what I think will be the most enjoyable part of tower defense games into a new realm. You’ve not only got to worry about mining enough resources to build your base, but you must also build the base, keep your essentials topped up, and battle countless enemies each night.
Of course, all this work is going to cost you. A lot of the time, it’ll cost you your life. Don’t worry, though, because your consciousness gets uploaded to a server and downloaded into a brand new clone each time. If you’re struggling, death can be a fresh start, and we all need one of those now and then.
Cosminers doesn’t currently have a release date, but if you follow our socials and check out our free Patreon membership, then you’ll be the first to know when it’s about to launch.
