If you’re like me, then you’ve probably grown used to seeing lofty promises and huge funding goals on Kickstarter of late. Thankfully, not all projects are like that, and I’ve got a doosie that you’re probably going to want to get in on.

Aegis Force: The Scorian War is a 2.5D RPG that’s not looking for much in terms of funding, but promises something pretty special in the gameplay and visuals department.

Aegis Force: The Scorian War Offers An Octopath-Style Title You Can Be Part Of From Day 0

Live right now on Kickstarter, Aegis Force: The Scorian War, was seeking, and has already hit, its goal of just $2,500. For me, that makes the game a win-win already because you know for sure the game is definitely happening.

As with all of these projects, that’s not all, though. There are a plethora of rewards you could pledge for at incredibly reasonable prices. Sometimes a developer will ask for tens of thousands of dollars to make your own NPC, but Deseret Games Studio isn’t asking for anywhere near that much for anything. The tier I’m most interested in is the Veiled Radiance Edition because it packs a physical art book and a t-shirt. Sadly, since I’m based in the UK, I won’t be able to get those, but I’ll settle for all the digital rewards I can get.

Okay, so now I’ve rambled on about why I think this is a pretty good value for money project, why do I think it’s going to be a good game? For one, its visuals are reminiscent of not just the retro JRPGs of my childhood, but they blend that with the 2.5D view of the Octopath series. I’ve always thought there was something special about that point between dimensions for RPGs, allowing for the perfect angle for story, combat, and everything in between.

There’s a fantastic blend of anime character art and pixel sprites to complement the basic backgrounds that the game’s inspirers used so well. I wouldn’t have been surprised to see this launching in the 90s, but as it is, this is a modern blast from the past that’ll give you the feel of filling in the gaps in an epic story with your imagination and the names of the crazy moves you pull off.

The story follows a group of warriors in the midst of a long-winded and terrible war. Over the course of the hours you pile into its grid-based combat and open overworld exploration, you’ll encounter an emotional story that takes you to all corners of the world impacted by the conflict.

Of course, there are plenty of RPGs out there, some really brilliant ones, that also throw you into the heat of a centuries-long war to see an emotional story play out that may or may not have consequences for the wider world. But how many of them are from massive game studios or publishers?

I’m not saying that Square Enix’s next title isn’t worth your money, but you don’t know how good an indie game can be until you give it a shot. You can try out the demo on Steam and see how you feel about it without putting any of your money on the line. If you’re anything like me, you like to support indie games where you can, and with times so hard economically right now, this is a good way to do so without breaking the bank.
