Darth Maul is easily one of the most iconic Star Wars villains, right next to other Force-wielding baddies like Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Kylo Ren. Now he’s starring in his own Disney+ animated series, aptly titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, which details his struggles to stay under the Empire’s radar while building his own criminal enterprise during the time between his Clone Wars heyday and the events of the Original Trilogy.

Naturally, Darth Maul has appeared in many Star Wars video games following his big-screen debut in 1999’s Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, either as a playable character or boss to be defeated. However, Maul has never had his own interactive adventure, though such a game was reportedly planned in the early 2010’s

Darth Maul Actor Sam Witwer Welcomes Chance To Do A Game Someday

Developer Red Fly, who worked on 2010’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, was said to be drawing influence from the Batman: Arkham series for this Maul-centric game, which was allegedly code-named “Damage.” Unfortunately, it was eventually scrapped when LucasArts supposedly wanted to make a tie-in for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Sam Witwer, who took over as the voice of Darth Maul starting with the fourth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was recently asked about this cancelled Maul game during an interview with DiscussingFilm. While on the subject, he said that while he might have been hesitant at first, he has since come around to the idea and thinks there could be “an incredible story” behind a Darth Maul-centered video game.

Of course, Witwer is no stranger to Star Wars video games, having played Galen “Starkiller” Marek in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and its previously mentioned sequel. He’s also voiced Maul in many of the games that have come since The Clone Wars, such as 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Outside of the Galaxy Far, Far, Away, he can be heard as Deacon St John in Days Gone, Captain Leon Ferris in The Callisto Protocol, and Walter Londra in Horizon Forbidden West‘s Burning Shores DLC.

There are probably a lot of Star Wars fans who would welcome the chance to unleash Maul’s devastating Force abilities in a standalone video game (myself included), and there is still plenty of space in Maul’s story to explore. In the meantime, these fans can now watch the first two epic episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney +.
